WashU global health leader to advise NIH center focused on advancing health research and training worldwide
William Bowen Professor of Medicine and Professor of Public Health Mark Huffman, MD, MPH, has been appointed to the advisory board of the Fogarty International Center at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Huffman received the invitation from U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
Huffman is co-director of WashU’s Global Health Center and co-director of the Global Health Futures Research Network. An internationally recognized cardiovascular physician-scientist, he leads research focused on preventing and treating cardiovascular disease and other chronic illnesses in low- and middle-income countries. His work has advanced global efforts to improve health systems, expand access to care and reduce the burden of noncommunicable diseases worldwide.
The Fogarty International Center serves as the NIH’s focal point for global health research and research training, supporting collaborations between U.S. and international scientists to address pressing global health challenges. As a member of the center’s advisory board, Huffman will help provide guidance on scientific priorities, research opportunities and training initiatives that strengthen global health research and improve health outcomes around the world. His appointment recognizes his leadership in global health, implementation science and cardiovascular disease prevention.
