Training the Next Generation of Cardiovascular Investigators

The Investigator Track at Washington University is designed for fellows who are committed to a career in investigator-initiated research and academic cardiology. This track provides a rigorous foundation in clinical cardiology, followed by dedicated, mentored research training that equips fellows with the skills and experience needed to become independent physician-scientists.

Overview

Investigator Track: Bridging Clinical Excellence with Scientific Discovery

The Physician Scientist Track at Washington University is designed for fellows who are committed to a career in academic cardiology and investigator-initiated research. This track offers a unique opportunity to integrate world-class clinical training with rigorous, mentored research—preparing fellows to become independent physician-scientists and leaders in cardiovascular discovery.

Fellows begin with 24 months of comprehensive clinical training, gaining broad exposure to cardiovascular medicine and fulfilling all COCATS requirements. This is followed by 2 to 3 years of dedicated research, during which fellows receive protected time, structured mentorship, and access to the university’s robust research infrastructure. Trainees will be provided with ongoing clinical training (continuity clinic etc.) during their dedicated research time to maintain and advance their clinical skills. Those interested in subspecialty training will have an opportunity to pursue those clinical experiences prior to their dedicated research time.

Whether pursuing basic sciencetranslational, clinical, policy, or population health research, fellows are supported in developing the skills, knowledge, and scholarly output necessary to launch successful academic careers. Many fellows in this track pursue career development awards (e.g., NIH K awards) and go on to lead innovative research programs that shape the future of cardiovascular care. Most of our trainees will be funded through our T32 program (Link to T32 program to be hyperlinked)

This track is ideal for individuals who are intellectually curious, self-driven, and passionate about advancing cardiovascular science through meaningful, high-impact research—while maintaining a strong foundation in clinical excellence.

What We Look for in the Investigator Track Applicants

Applicants to this track are reviewed by a multidisciplinary team of clinician-investigators and research faculty. We look for individuals who demonstrate:

  • A strong foundation in clinical medicine and a clear commitment to academic cardiology
  • Prior research experience, including publications, abstracts, or advanced degrees (e.g., PhD, MPH, MSCI)
  • Scientific curiosity and creativity, with a desire to ask meaningful, hypothesis-driven questions and pursue rigorous investigation
  • Resilience and self-direction, essential for navigating the challenges of a research career
  • Alignment with our research strengths, including cardiovascular biology, imaging, policy, genetics, population health, and implementation science

We also value applicants who have a long-term vision for their research career and are seeking a program that will invest in their development as future leaders in cardiovascular science.
