The Interventional Cardiology Fellowship at Washington University School of Medicine is a rigorous, one-year ACGME-accredited program designed to train the next generation of leaders in interventional cardiology—whether in academic medicine or private practice. Our program offers a unique blend of high-volume procedural experience, cutting-edge technology, and academic excellence, all within a collaborative and supportive environment.
Program Strengths and Clinical Excellence
- Complex Coronary Interventions: Fellows gain hands-on experience in a wide range of advanced procedures, including:
- Left main coronary interventions
- Bifurcation stenting techniques
- Chronic total occlusions (CTOs)
- High-risk PCI in “no-option” patients
- Intravascular Imaging & Physiology: Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) are utilized in 100% of cases, alongside physiologic assessments such as FFR and iFR, to optimize procedural outcomes and patient care.
- Minimal Floor Responsibilities: Fellows focus primarily on procedural training, with limited inpatient service duties, allowing for deep immersion in interventional techniques.
- Longitudinal and Specialized Clinics: In addition to a continuity clinic, fellows participate in specialized clinics such as renal denervation, providing exposure to emerging therapies and patient populations.
Diverse Patient Population
Washington University and Barnes-Jewish Hospital serve a broad and diverse patient base:
- Emergency care for inner-city St. Louis and surrounding regions
- STEMI and acute coronary syndrome patients transported from up to 100 miles away
- High-risk and complex cases referred from across the Midwest
Peripheral and Structural Experience
While the core focus is coronary intervention, fellows also gain exposure to:
- Peripheral vascular interventions
- Structural heart disease (e.g., TAVR, MitraClip)
Note: Formal structural training requires an additional dedicated fellowship year.
Academic and Research Opportunities
- Access to large clinical databases and ongoing clinical trials
- Opportunities to participate in clinical research, quality improvement projects, and scholarly publications
- Mentorship from nationally recognized leaders in interventional cardiology
Career Preparation
Graduates of the program are exceptionally well-prepared to:
- Lead interventional programs in academic or private settings
- Adopt and innovate new technologies and treatment paradigms
Contribute meaningfully to the advancement of cardiovascular care.
