Cardiac Electrophysiology faculty members Daniel Cooper, MD and Timothy Smith, DPhil, MD will be in new roles in the Division beginning July 1. Dr. Cooper will be taking over as EP Lab Director, with Dr. Smith stepping into the role of EP Fellowship Director.
Dr. Cooper completed his MD at Loyola University Chicago-Stritch School of Medicine. He then completed Internal Medicine Residency, Chief Residency, Cardiovascular Medicine Fellowship, and Cardiovascular EP Fellowship training before joining our Division as EP Faculty in 2011. Dr. Cooper has been our EP Fellowship Director since 2016. During that time, he has guided a highly successful EP training program that has been in existence since the earliest days of EP as a specialty. Dr. Cooper has expanded our program to six fellows and incorporated training at the VA in our fellows clinical rotations. His commitment to teaching and clinical excellence is reflected in the quality of the fellows he has trained and advised. In his new role as EP Lab Director, Dr. Cooper will continue to advance technological innovation, drive changes in efficiency, and oversee our efforts to measure and improve the quality of the EP care we deliver in the CPC.
Dr. Smith completed his D. Phil. in Physiology at Oxford before moving on to Duke University where he completed his MD. Dr. Smith then completed his Internal Medicine residency, Cardiology Fellowship, and Cardiovascular EP at Beth Israel. At Beth Israel, Dr. Smith trained with Dr. Mark Josephson who was a pioneer in the development of diagnostic techniques and ablation approaches used for catheter treatment of arrhythmia syndromes. Dr. Smith joined our faculty in 2001 after two years at Boston University. Dr. Smith is particularly suited to become EP Fellowship Director given his commitment to teaching. Dr. Smith has been the Course Master for the WUMS 4th year Cardiac Arrhythmias and Electrophysiology rotation, a lecturer in the WUMS 2nd year Cardiovascular Diseases Pathophysiology/Pharmacology (ECG and Arrhythmia) course, and has provided since 2006 the highly acclaimed weekly EKG conference for the general fellowship. During Dr. Smith’s tenure as EP Lab Director, he has overseen a number of changes in the technology and facilities that we depend on for the invasive treatment of arrhythmia syndromes, and has worked directly with the CPC leadership to champion efficiency and quality in our EP Lab.
