Director, Aortopathy and Master Clinician Fellowship Program
The Noémi and Michael Neidorff Fellow in Aortopathy and Master Clinician in Cardiology is a 1-year position to begin July, 2020. This position is Advanced Fellowship Training in the Cardiovascular Division at Washington University in St. Louis and Barnes-Jewish Hospital for 12 months for a cardiology fellow who has recently completed 3 years in an ACGME-accredited general cardiology fellowship program.Train with a Master cardiology clinician and aortopathy specialist (Alan C. Braverman, MD) at a tertiary referral academic medical center. The Neidorff Fellow will evaluate and manage patients with general and complex cardiovascular diseases in an ambulatory and inpatient setting in a large academic tertiary referral medical center. Duties include caring for inpatients and outpatients in a busy continuity care clinic and evaluating and managing patients admitted to the hospital on this service while working directly under the mentorship of Alan C. Braverman, MD. Goals and strengths of the fellowship include the following:
- Gain special expertise in the cardiovascular evaluation and management of Marfan syndrome and related aortopathy conditions. This experience includes management of a large volume of aortopathy disorders (Marfan syndrome, Loeys-Dietz syndrome, familial thoracic aortic aneurysm disease, aortic dissection, bicuspid aortic valve aortopathy) in the outpatient clinic and in-hospital and performing inpatient consultation on patients with aortic disease.
Provides care for over 250 patients with Marfan syndrome, >100 patients with other rare hereditary thoracic aortic aneurysm disorders, 200 patients with BAV, and for patients with acute and chronic aortic dissection, thoracic aortic aneurysm, unexplained aortic dilatation, and related aortopathy and vasculopathy disorders (FMD, SCAD). - Gain experience in the interpretation of aortic imaging (echo, CT, MRI) in aortopathy disorders.
- Participate in the multidisciplinary Marfan syndrome and Aortopathy Clinic with Dr. Braverman and with a Washington University medical geneticist and genetic counselor.
- Participate in clinical research and scholarly writing involving aortic disease and aortopathy disorders.
- Our center is involved in multiple registries involving aortic disease.
- Database in place including 260 current patients with Marfan syndrome.
- High volume enroller (>450 cases) into the International Registry of Acute Aortic Dissection (IRAD) study and member of the Montalcino Aortic Consortium.
- Protected time for scholarly activities/writing will be provided.
- Travel expenses to a scientific or aortopathy meeting will be provided.
- Exposure to clinical care with colleagues in vascular surgery, cardiac surgery, and cardiovascular radiology imaging to be arranged as requested.
- Participate in educational conferences in the Cardiovascular Division and Washington University medical center including cardiology grand rounds, patient management conference, and aortic disease conferences.
