Director, Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology Fellowship Program
Justin M. Vader, MD– Director
Amanda K. Verma, MD– Associate Director
The Washington University Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology Fellowship Program is an ACGME-accredited one year training program for graduates of general cardiology fellowship training programs. It provides concentrated experience in the management of patients with heart failure across the spectrum of disease with a particular focus on advanced heart failure. Fellows will become proficient in the identification and management of heart failure across the phenotypic spectrum including genetic cardiomyopathies, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, inflammatory and infiltrative cardiomyopathies, and peripartum cardiomyopathy. Fellows will become proficient in the selection of candidates for temporary mechanical circulatory support and in managing their care. Fellows will become proficient in the selection of candidates for advanced heart failure therapies including left ventricular assist device and transplant and will manage patients across the course of these therapies from bridging support, perioperative care, and long-term care. Our fellows are central to the success of our high volume left ventricular assist device and transplant program and are engaged in quality improvement initiatives and clinical research involving advanced heart failure and transplant care. In addition to heart failure training, fellows acquire complementary skills in managing pulmonary hypertension, palliative care, transplant immunology, and transplant infectious disease. Our fellows consistently go on to work in strong academically-oriented advanced heart failure programs across the nation.
