Director, Advanced Interventional Fellowship

Marc Sintek, MD

The Interventional Cardiology Fellowship is designed to foster the career of fellows who will be entering into academic medicine or private practice following completion of their training. Washington University School of Medicine and Barnes-Jewish Hospital provide care for a diverse group of patients with coronary heart disease. We provide emergency care to inner city populations and the surrounding the St. Louis area, as well as patients with acute STEMI and coronary syndromes, who arrive by helicopter from as far as 100 miles away. Our interventional fellows also obtain considerable experience with treating “no option” patients who have failed conventional surgical and interventional therapies. The use of intravascular imaging and physiologic assessment of coronary flow to optimize clinical outcomes is also a major focus of the interventional training program. Our program also allows fellows to obtain experience with peripheral vascular cases and structural heart disease, although formal training in structural heart disease requires an additional year of dedicated training. Training in clinical research is also possible through access to large clinical data bases, and exposure to numerous ongoing clinical trials. The field of Interventional Cardiology is a rapidly evolving and the interventional fellows that complete the Washington University training program are well equipped to become leaders in adopting and developing new treatment paradigms in their future Institutions.
