To commemorate the 65th Anniversary of the Cardiovascular Division at Washington University School of Medicine, in 2012 the Division inaugurated the Smith-Oliver Society, named in honor of the first chief of cardiology at Barnes Hospital, Dr. John Smith, and the first chief of cardiology at Jewish Hospital, Dr. Charles Oliver. The Smith-Oliver Society recognizes the rich traditions of cardiology that existed at Barnes Hospital (1947-1997) and Jewish Hospital (1971-1997), prior to the unification of both programs in 1997.
Sense of family and community
The goal of the society is to foster a sense of family and community among the fellows who have completed their clinical and/or research training programs at Washington University School of Medicine. All current full-time faculty members within the Cardiovascular Division are members of the Society. Current cardiology trainees are initiated into the Smith-Oliver Society at the time that they complete their clinical and/or research training at Washington University School of Medicine. Past Cardiovascular Division faculty and trainees who have spent a year within Washington University’s cardiac clinical or research fellowships are also members of the Smith-Oliver Society.
Networking opportunities
Through society events, fellows will have the opportunity to meet and network with alumni of the Washington University School of Medicine, many of whom are leaders in cardiology, medicine, research and education both nationally and internationally. A major goal of the Smith-Oliver Society is to create an endowment that will provide unique new educational opportunities for cardiology trainees at Washington University School of Medicine.
