The 21st annual meeting of the Society for Heart and Vascular Metabolism (SHVM) was held in St. Louis September 8th through 11th, with Professor of Medicine in the Cardiovascular Division Dr. Linda Peterson serving as SHVM President. This is the first time that the meeting has been held in St. Louis, and events were held in Clayton at the Le Méridien hotel as well as on the WashU Medicine campus, with dinners at the St. Louis Art Museum and Grant’s Farm.
The Division Faculty, including Drs. Mark Huffman, Joel Schilling, Attila Kovacs, and Carla Weinheimer, were invited speakers at the meeting. Drs. Sharon Cresci, Joel Schilling, and Nada Abumrad were on the organizing committee, and both Dr. Cresci and Dr. Kory Lavine were moderators. Other WashU Medicine faculty members who spoke included Drs. Nada Abumrad, Claire Crewe, Anne Carol Goldberg, Samuel Klein, Yongjian Liu, Cornelius von Morze, and James Quirk. Additionally, post-doc Sean Tatum and PhD student Mandy Chan from WashU Medicine also delivered speeches.
This year’s meeting had 168 participants, travelling from 13 countries and 20 US states. The mission of the Society for Heart and Vascular Metabolism is “to promote scientific research, to disseminate original research findings, to encourage collaborations and to provide a stimulating environment for young investigators and trainees in the field of heart and vascular metabolism.”
at Mallinckrodt and at the Mouse Cardiovascular Phenotyping Core. A keynote lecture was given by Dr. Robert E. Gerszten of Harvard Medical School and Dr. Martin Young of U. Alabama gave the William C. Stanley Award lecture. A special session was held on September 11th in conjunction with The Korean Society of Lipid and Atherosclerosis.
Optional activities for participants included a trip to the Gateway Arch and run/walk in Shaw Park. The meeting was productive and enjoyable for all participants, and we congratulate our division faculty participants, especially Dr. Peterson for her leadership in bringing this exciting event to WashU!
