Dr. Alan Braverman, Professor of Medicine and Alumni Endowed Professor in Cardiovascular Diseases, has been appointed the inaugural Head of the new Section of General Cardiology in the Division.
Dr. Braverman received his MD from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine in 1985. He went on to complete his internal medicine residency, cardiology fellowship, and chief residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA.
Dr. Braverman joined Washington University in 1991 as an Assistant Professor and rapidly rose through the ranks, becoming a full Professor in 2003 and being named Alumni Endowed Professor in Cardiovascular Diseases in 2011. Over the course of his career, he has established himself as a world leader in the management of aortic disease, serving as Director of the Marfan Syndrome and Aortopathy Clinic since 1996. His dedication to clinical excellence, research, and education has been recognized with numerous awards, including the E. Grey Dimond, M.D. Take Wing Award from his alma mater, the Hugh D. McCulloch Award from the American Heart Association, and multiple Teacher of the Year Awards from Washington University’s Department of Medicine. He has been consistently named among “America’s Top Doctors” and “Best Doctors in America,” and his exceptional patient care has earned him accolades such as the Neville Grant Award for Clinical Excellence and the Highest Patient Satisfaction Award, ranking in the top 10% of clinical faculty for multiple consecutive years.
Beyond his academic and clinical achievements, Dr. Braverman has demonstrated a deep commitment to community service and advocacy. He has served as a longstanding leader within The Marfan Foundation, including as a member of its Board of Directors and former Chair of the Professional Advisory Board. Under his guidance, the Heartworks St. Louis Gala has raised over $4 million to support patients and families affected by Marfan syndrome and related conditions. His dedication to advancing the field extends to his role as Chair of the GenTAC Alliance Patients, Families, and Clinicians Working Group and as a member of the Executive Committee of the Montalcino Aortic Consortium.
As Section Head, Dr. Braverman will bring his unparalleled expertise and leadership to define, develop, and steward the general cardiology program in the division. He will establish the organizational framework for the new Section, lead efforts to advance inpatient and outpatient general cardiology care, mentor fellows, and foster excellence in clinical research relevant to general cardiology. His vision and passion will undoubtedly elevate the Division’s contributions to patient care, education, and discovery.
